investing in the future: a rare interview with Alex Waislitz

wednesday 23 october

The Young Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce is proud to bring you Alex Waislitz, Executive Chairman and Founder of Thorney Investment Group.

Alex Waislitz is a serial investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist with an amazing story.

Alex grew up in Ormond, Melbourne. The son of migrant parents, Alex got his first job at 11 years old as a newspaper-boy and at the age of 13 he was given some stocks and his first lesson on how to trade them.

Beginning his career in the US, in 1991 Alex returned home to Melbourne and liquidated $1.15 million worth of shares to found his very own investment company: Thorney Investment Group. Since then, he has come to be known by some as ‘The Warren Buffett of Australia’, by turning this investment into what is now a $1.5 billion fortune.

Year after year, Alex has made big returns by wading into the volatile world of ASX-listed companies and investing in new tech and AI startups, with some recent investments including Afterpay, Credible Labs, iSelect, Dubber, and more.

Alex is the Executive Chairman and Founder of Thorney Investment Group, Thorney Opportunities Limited and Thorney Technologies Limited. He is also the Vice President of Collingwood Football Club, and in 2014 he established the Waislitz Foundation with the aim of donating $50 million to charity.

In a rare interview, Alex will share his journey from young paperboy to becoming an internationally recognised investor. He will explain what he looks for in investments, companies and founders and why not-for-profit work is so important to him.

CHARITY DONATION

As many of you know, 50% of ticket proceeds from our events are donated to a charity of the speaker's choice. In this way, the Young AICC has raised over $100,000 for various charities since 2010.

For this event, Alex has selected that the evening's proceeds be donated to Save a Child’s Heart, an Israeli-based international humanitarian charity, providing life-saving heart surgery and follow-up care for children from developing countries regardless of their race, religion, gender, nationality, or financial status.

In May 2019, the Waislitz Family Foundation donated an amazing $1,000,000 to Save a Child's Heart. This is part of a longstanding relationship with the organisation, including Alex's 2012 climb to the peak of Mt Kilimanjaro to raise money and awareness for paediatric heart disease in Africa.
